This 30 mile ride starts and ends at Friday Harbor. Best thing to do is to drive your bikes up to Anacortes and take your bike across to Friday Harbor on the ferry. According to Citysearch, which has excerpted ride directions from the popular book by Bill Woods Bicycling the Backroads Around Northern Washington, there is also a 10-mile center loop which you can do if you have the energy and the time.
Also according to Bill and Erin Woods, "Because the drive to Anacortes and the ferry ride to San Juan Island take several hours, we strongly advise making the San Juan Island tour at least a two-day weekend."
Starting Point: Ferry landing at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. The ferry leaves Anacortes, Skagit County. Take Exit 230 (state Route 20) from Interstate 5 and proceed west to Fidalgo Island. Follow the signs to Anacortes and the ferry landing.
